Abstract:

The article deals with graphic solutions of the books covers developed by Myron Levytskyi, the prominent overseas Ukrainian artist, born in Lviv (1913 - 1993) during the 1960-1990s. In the general structure of the work of this artist (easel and monumental-decorative painting, icon painting, polychrome of churches, easel and applied graphics, art journalism), the book graphics has occupied a central place. Myron Levytskyi had a special feeling when organizing a sculptural image in the compositions of the books covers and periodicals. Typographic formatting and developing aesthetic cover image is a complex and multifunctional process requiring knowledge in the layout, creating an original sketch of a graphic vignette cover, competent selection of the headset when formatting all elements in the original layout. Therefore, the rational side of the question became the first basis for the formation of figurative and aesthetic constants in the narrow profile sphere of the book graphic arts of Myron Levytskyi. A retrospective view of the creative way of the artist makes it possible to actualize classical and contemporary art issues in order to emphasize the contribution of outstanding Ukrainian book artists to the national cultural heritage. In the article the formative ideas of world art modernism integration into the author's model of the book design is proved. The necessity of division of graphics into applied and easel in Miron Levytsky's creative activity, in accordance with the professional tasks of the author is determined
