«Essays on the History of Ukrainian Industry» (1936): on the study of the theoretical heritage of Volodymyr Sichynsky

Abstract: 

The purpose of the study is to review the scientific and theoretical heritage of V. Sichinsky, created in the period 1923–1943, in particular the range of literature that formed the basis of the study of the history of Ukrainian industry. This period, the so-called «Prague», is considered one of the most fruitful in the research and creative work of V. Sichinsky. At this time he works as a teacher at the Ukrainian Studio of Plastic Arts, Ukrainian Higher Pedagogical Institute Drahomanov, Ukrainian Free University. Volodymyr Sichynsky was habilitated for the title of associate professor, and later for his work on art theory he was awarded the title of professor of the art history department of the Faculty of Philosophy. The scientist actively developed and deepened his scientific research, made numerous reports and publications on Ukrainian art history, participated in a number of international congresses, where he presented his scientific achievements. Volodymyr Sichynsky publishes his scientific articles, reviews, reports on folk art and architecture, the history of the development of arts and crafts, the activities of Ukrainian artists and more in the publications «Scientific Collection», «Ukraine» and «Bibliological News».

Research methodology. The comparative-typological method of analysis of V. Sichinsky's theoretical works is applied. Methods of scientific research of texts were also chosen for the study of theoretical heritage, in particular, the method of classification, which contributed to a detailed study of decorative and applied arts, including the history of Ukrainian industry, its division by subject and issue. The scientific novelty of the study is that for the first time an analysis of the scientific and theoretical heritage of V. Sichynsky in the context of studying the history of Ukrainian industry. Conclusions. It is established that Prague became a platform for further formation of the scientist V. Sichinsky. The result of the scientist's activity in the period 1923–1943 was a number of scientific works that made a significant contribution to the development of domestic art history, history and theory of decorative and applied arts, including analysis of historical facts about the development of Ukrainian industry.
