In the context of modern urban transformations, the sociocultural space plays an
important role in the life of a city, becoming the most important factor in the comfort
of living. However, in Ukraine in particular, it is far from harmonious: residential
areas deliberately relegated to the periphery of civilizational processes; hopelessly
outdated infrastructure, etc. One of the most important problems is post-
industrialization of the post-Soviet model. Changing the functional purpose of
abandoned industrial facilities allows for additional space for work, cultural leisure,
tourism, and active urban life. The purpose of this article is to study the experience of
revitalizing industrial facilities using the example of the Izolyatsia Cultural
Foundation.
The history of the establishment of the IZOLYATSIA art foundation is analyzed
and discussed, which convincingly proves the possibility of transforming abandoned
industrial territories into modern powerful art venues.
It has been proven that the organizers of the foundation set themselves quite
ambitious goals from the very beginning and handled them admirably. Izolyatsia did
not become a provincial phenomenon, but grew in strength with each passing year,
confidently setting its sights on the international level and attracting more and more
world-class artists. However, experience has once again proven the truth of the
proverb “there is strength in numbers”. The activities of a few enthusiasts alone were
not enough to completely overcome the “Soviet” mentality in the minds of most local
residents. The region needed a focused social and cultural policy from the authorities,
which, however, never materialized. The temporary occupation of the region made it
impossible to continue creating contemporary art in any form.
