Abstract:

The purpose of the article is to identify the mechanisms by which a visual representation of Ukrainian national identity in the work of Volodymyr Patyk and to clarify its conceptual parameters is formed.

The research methodology is based on a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach that integrates art-historical, historical-cultural, sociocultural and source-studies methods. Such a strategy makes it possible to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of national identity in Volodymyr Patyk’s work, considering the complexity of his artistic thinking, the historical circumstances in which his individual style was formed, and the specific character of the Lviv art environment in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries.

The semantic, stylistic, and cultural-historical parameters of Volodymyr Patyk’s work have been analysed in the context of the representation of Ukrainian national identity. Scientific research has clarified the nature and components of national identity. Among the significant forms of representing national identity, cultural identity stands out, with art serving as its principal instrument. The formation of the phenomenon of national identity in the visual arts of Ukraine in the second half of the 20th century is traced. On the background of the Ukrainian artistic tradition, the key visual and symbolic markers of Volodymyr Patyk’s work that form the phenomenon of the “national code” are analysed. It shows how Volodymyr Patyk’s artistic language combines local traditions, modernist strategies and the artist’s individual vision of national culture. Volodymyr Patyk interprets the Ukrainian landscape, coloristic expression, peasant archetypes and poetic imagery as an autonomous aesthetic system that goes beyond the official stylistic prescriptions of the Soviet era and embodies a model of national self-identification.

The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of national identity in the work of Volodymyr Patyk has been carried out, integrating stylistic, historical-cultural, sociological and source-based approaches. In contrast to previous studies, the focus is not only on the aesthetics of his painting, but above all, on the mechanisms through which the “national” is formed as an artistic meaning.

The research demonstrates that Volodymyr Patyk’s work represents a unique model of natural cultural autonomy, shaped through the tools of his own artistic language. The consistent dominance of coloristic expression over illustration, the rejection of rhetorical narrativity and the systematic return to the imagery of the Ukrainian landscape enabled Volodymyr Patyk to create an aesthetic that functions as a mechanism of self-identification.
