The development of new art forms has always been controversial in society. Most of the well-known today artists were deemed revolutionaries and norms disrupters back in the day.
The objective of this article is to analyze the sociopolitical and cultural conditions for the formation and transformation of art in the XXth century. The research has proved that the characteristic feature of the protest art in the second part of the XXth century was the mixture of social, spiritual, sexual, and political protests. The left philosophy and freudism, zen buddhism and occultism, pacifism and new LSD culture, nonconformity, etc. were closely intertwined in it. Society needed critical insight in it so much that any disorderly conduct was interpreted by intelligent critics as a bold challenge to the system, fight against the moral degradation of the consumer society.
We can conclude that many things that had been deemed extremely revolutionary in the middle of the XXth century completely lost their radicalism in the late XXth – early XXIth century. The revolutionaries and rebellers were recognized as the classics by the historic impartiality. The protest came into fashion, became a trend, and there was a demand for it. The counterculture lost its socio-revolutionary undertone and turned into entertainment for the limited number of intelligent people. The pointedly proclaimed goods anti-commercialism became additional advertising and created new market places.
