The article highlights the stages in which the formation of restoration work in the museum centers of Ukraine in the twentieth century, touches on the creation of museum institutions, which were created mainly through personal initiatives of certain individuals and numerous scientific, cultural, educational and church societies. The museum, as a cultural, educational, and research institution, divides its activities into several sectors, so many culturally interested people began to come to such institutions. The museum encouraged artists and scientists to form a thorough scientific base for the study of Ukrainian painting. Understanding the structure of ancient works of art made it possible to understand the reasons for the destruction of the easel monuments and monumental painting, as well as to find ways to stop it.For a clearer understanding of the research topic, the article was divided into several stages and each of them was analyzed. In each of the stages, the most important points of development of restoration business were considered, the experience of restoration practice of the last centuries is investigated. The increase in the number of museums and the acquisition of their collections has led to the creation of restoration centers and workshops. Therefore, two main restoration centers in Kyiv and Lviv were traced, which analyze the activities of museums and the work of restoration workshops. The chronology of the creation of restoration environments in Ukraine of the XX century is considered and the sequence of activity of restorers in museums of Ukraine and abroad are covered. Over the years, their traditions have developed, a team has been formed and grown, capable of performing the most difficult tasks. At the same time, the nature of restoration, scientific, methodical work, and the main activities of the institution were determined, which, in general, are based on the continuity of experience, knowledge, close ties with the museum, scientific, and related restoration organizations of Ukraine and other countries.
The problem posed in the twentieth century, the science of restoration was formed, which organized the methodology of the restoration industry and opened restoration activities. But many questions remain unfounded or unresolved.A study of the restoration practices of past centuries should shed light on these issues. Today, the history of restoration is considered a complex scientific discipline based on the methodological principles of history, art history, aesthetics, and cultural studies. The purpose of the article is to cover the stages of formation of the restoration work in the museum centers of Ukraine of the XX – XXI centuries.
